STORY:
In the West African nation of Senegal, a cooperative of over 100 Wolof women create these elegant baskets by hand weaving strips of plastic recycled from prayer mats and rugs. They use traditional coil-style weaving techniques that have been passed down for generations. By merging their traditional weaving skills with local sustainable natural fibres allows rural Wolof women to comfortably earn supplemental income while sharing their modern creations with homes around the world.
It takes the women two days to finish a single large hamper. These woven hampers store anything and everything. Some of our favorite uses are for laundry, toys, linens, plants, or even kitchen supplies and garden gear.
By purchasing this basket you are helping to support these female weavers by providing them with economic empowerment.
